About two weeks ago in the chat room the subject of saving/investing for retirement came up and it seemed that most were interested, but no one had a clue as to where to begin. I would like to share my experience with you. About twelve years ago my wife and I became empty nesters (the kids moved out and started their own lives). The money we used to spend raising our family started to accumulate (hey, good deal). I am sure you will appreciate my keeping this short, so I will try. Long term investing (five years or more) should include stock mutual funds. Now don't cash in your CDs. You need some of those, too. Mutual fund companies invest your money (along with other people) in the stock market. You can buy stock/bond mutual funds from banks, insurance agents, stock brokers and investment advisors. Buying direct from mutual fund companies avoids commissions, reduces costs and increases returns. What is important is that you understand what you are investing in. You don't want to put all your money in a mutual fund that invests only in computer manufacturers or healthcare. Invest in a fund that is diversified across all industries. Did you ever hear of the S&P 500 or a mutual fund that invests in it? Buy it! Learn why! There is a lot to learn and there is one mutual fund company that goes the 'extra span' to educate investors.....The Vanguard Group.... www.vanguard.com. They are also the second largest fund company in the country. Fidelity is the largest and more expensive. Vanguard offers brief pamphlets telling you what you need to know. You can also buy books covering the same subjects in greater detail. I recommend "Bogle on Mutual Funds" authored by the founder of The Vanguard Group. You can build a good cable system! You can also build a basic, workable understanding of the risks and rewards of the financial markets. If it is not your cup of tea, find a good, honest investment advisor and get started. Now is better than later. lol

Ya reckon the DSS market is still a viable competitor to hard line cable? Thinkin' about bailin' on the standard and going contract, is there any good money in it?
