Hey Dan, did you get that fluid drained off the knees? Ouch! Had that done in high school from playing football and wresting. That shit hurts like hell.

Hey Doug. Snow starting to melt yet? Yeah, I believe that some of the attitudes and fights are what started linemen at Schenck to be called "Schencksters" Much tougher than gangsters! Those were some crazy ass days. Seemed like there was a lot more pride in what we did then and no one, I mean no one, ever called the cops on each other. If they lost, they just picked themselves off the ground and dusted themselves off and went about their business. Hell, most of the time, when it was finished we'd be sitting around downing a cold one and laughing about it. That ice cold beer fealt good on a busted lip! Guess those days are long gone though. Got to roll with the changes. Well, time to get ready to hit the road again. Damn, the weekends sure go quick! Take it easy.

Wow, Mr.Vest! Having read some of the disparaging comments made about you and witnessed your most honorable tact in handling the matter, knowing now that you have read a Zap Comic or two only strengthens my belief that you are one upstanding pillar in the cable community. Sir, I am proud!

dammitman...You asked about DWDM. Dense wavelength division multiplexing is a fiber-optic transmission technique that employs light wavelengths to transmit data parallel-by-bit or serial-by-character. In a nutshell, it's a way to use one strand of fiber to do more than one thing. It's along the lines of loading a digital stack (QAM) with more that one channel. Until a few years ago we were only able to use a single strand of fiber for one thing at a time. Use of DWDM allows providers to offer services such as e-mail, video, and multimedia carried as Internet protocol (IP) data over asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and voice carried over SONET/SDH. Despite the fact that these formats—IP, ATM, and SONET/SDH—provide unique bandwidth management capabilities, all three can be transported over the optical layer using DWDM. This unifying capability allows the service provider the flexibility to respond to customer demands over one network. For a good tutorial on DWDM go to http://www.iec.org/tutorials/dwdm/index.html

I sincerely appeciate the information Mr. Ruiz,I have been exposed to very little info regarding DWDM but I do understand the "nutshell". Our current design employs a central headend to local hub, the next phase of this project will be using DWDM to transport services to two other areas that are currently on stand alone headends. I'm smart enough to be dangerous with coax, so any info i can get for fiber transportation is like gold to me. Thanx again.

Yeah, Zap Comics had some pretty funny stuff, Dammitman. Allen Ruiz, what do you think about the article, "Busted By Broadband" in this weeks Time Magazine, if you have had the opportunity to read it that is?. Pretty interesting. They discuss a new device called a LambdaRouter. Anyway, if you get a chance, check it out. Tell me what your opinion is on the article. You seem to be quite educated in fiber optics applications, and I am trying to discover how these changes are going to affect the industry, so I can be prepared and diversified enough to keep on plugging on in the future. What do you think the future has in store for the catv industry and what fields are going to be in highest demand?

I got a good idea for some of you shmucks who are into composite pricing.
Why don't you start at the top with it. If industry standard for a proj. mngr. is say,$1200/wk
pay him $1100/wk and make him pay for his office, his secretary, his computer, his cell phone, his vehicle,
his air fare, even his stinkin' pencil out of that. Then at the end of the year or the job, tell him his bonus was part of his pay all along.
Then he will know what it is like for a sub-contractor to spend what amounts to 2 or 3 days a week pounding free ground rods, or cranking free anchors,
cutting in 8 free straight splices,or digging in free peds.while footing the bills on your help, your tools, the fuel, your ins., and giving away your blood and sweat.
I think that you people who decide to go with composite prices are a lower form of life than any crack-head or drunkard or wife-beater, you are a sell out to every one that gets out there and actually produces ANYTHING.
I'd put you lower than a gay male prostitute. You tell us that it makes it easier to keep track and to estimate costs, well you are a loser and a lazy bum.Quit hiring idiots into your office and get people who will learn their jobs
instead of paying some college boy $150,000/yr.+ benifits simply because he held the high score on pac-man.It is people like you who are running the industry down, making good people not care about their work because the are not getting fairly paid for half of it.
Shame on you and the bullshit way you think.
