I have been in this business for well over 40 years. In this business it is feast or famine. Mostly because there is always some ignorant person willing to bid a job at the "going rate" or worse yet below cost just to get the job. There are few OSP ads on this site that will lead you in to prosperity. You can find good work but it almost always comes from your own networking and past satisfied customers, not on here or another web site. If you are an "unknown", meaning little or no experience and/or little or no relationship with the companies you are seeking work from, it will be difficult to gain a contact with anyone.
At this snapshot in time, fiber contractors and splicers are a dime a dozen. Good ones can be hard to find. Bad ones are all over. Some pay there bill, some flat out do not. And there is no magical list of the ones that do and dont. Some companies, Cable TV and Phone, have a predetermined pricing. They dont bid jobs but rather say this is what we will pay you. I do NOT ever accept those lowball prices. If they want our company to work for them, they have to pay our prices, which includes ALL expenses plus a fair and reasonable profit.
If I had it to do over again, I would gear up to be a Master Electrician or an Electrical Lineman. Work is about the same, just a different wire. Pay is better and you are always home at night. People will continue to need and demand more power, so you will never be out of work.
