Job Title: OSP Construction Technician III
Industry Standard Job Title: Fiber Splicer
Reports to: Construction Manager
Jobs Purpose:
The OSP Construction Technician III is responsible for placing, splicing and the maintenance of communications infrastructure and telecommunication pathway including aerial, buried and underground. The OSP Construction Technician III will also maintain telecommunications infrastructure such as fiber cable, utility poles, and various communication and construction equipment for both wireline and wireless communications.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Responsible for placing, rearranging, and removing outside plant, including aerial, underground, submarine, buried, block and house cables, poles, and associated hardware/fixtures including materials handling and tracking.
• Capable of performing fiber optic cable prep, closure setup, splicing and testing.
• Connecting wires and cables to terminals and attaching /detaching various kinds of hardware to wires, cables, building or poles.
• Performing construction work using designated equipment (i.e., digging holes, placing poles, etc.) which may include the prep of manholes and hand holes.
• Operating Company motor vehicles of varying gross weights to transport equipment.
• Ability to pull and back equipment trailers.
• May involve any or all, climbing ladders, poles, working aloft in aerial lifts and buckets.
• Requires the ability to see and distinguish wire and cable colors.
• Responsible for the operation of heavy construction equipment used in the construction of OSP cable, conduit and pole lines.
• May involve varying shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, and unscheduled shifts as determined by the needs of the business.
• Receive and follow verbal and/or written work orders and instructions from supervisor
• Ability to analyze complex schematic drawings to determine work to be done, methods and sequence of tasks.
• Ability to follow standards and practices while meeting service deadlines.
• Perform housekeeping duties of assigned Company vehicles and various work locations for the safety of the employee and protection of public as well as the facilities under construction.
• Communicate and coordinate with other work groups to perform tests on work in progress or completed and obtain additional information regarding work assignment as needed.
• Perform preventative maintenance on assigned company tools, equipment, and motor vehicle.
• Perform repetitive tasks, e.g., manually digging poles/and or holes.
• Responsible to meet customer specific and company safety, quality, and production standards
Qualifications:
• 3+ years telecom experience Including fiber splicing and testing.
• Valid state driver's license with clean driving record
• Ability to see and perceive differences in wire and cable colors.
• Ability to lift and move up to 100lbs.
• Understand the safety is paramount in everything the construction team does.
• AutoCad/Visio experience a plus
• Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of products.
• Excellent verbal, written, phone, and interpersonal skills.
