Job Description

Job Title: Directional Boring Operator

Reports To:

Job Purpose:

If you’re a skilled Directional Drilling / Boring Machine Operator who wants to work for a company that

and driven individual whose goal is to provide exceptional customer service.
Candidates should have experience in operating heavy equipment such as a HDD Rig, Boring Machine, B
Excavator, or other similar equipment.
This position requires: good communication and self-motivation skills; the ability to operate hand
tools, trenchers and heavy equipment; the ability to use a cable locator, hand test set, and other test
equipment. Duties required of this position are varied, including, but not limited to:

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Understanding ground conditions for drilling/boring and construction of buried and
underground facilities
• Operating and maintaining all vehicles, test and digging equipment in a safe and responsible
manner
• working with excavation tools such as shovel, spade, pick, trencher, backhoe, cable plow, etc.;
and other duties as assigned.
• Daily maintenance checks on machines
• Read communications prints for placing conduit or cables underground
• Experience with Utility placement in Public Right of Way
• Set equipment up including the drill, water tanks and grounding the machine
• Perform pot holing, locating and remediation
• Drill out following the predetermined drill path to the exit pit
• Calculate speeds and feeds
• Load and unload tools and use a pre-setter to determine lengths
• Understand and adjust to hold geometric dimensions and tolerance
• Must be familiar with One Call laws in the area of operation
• Back-pull conduits and cables from exit pit to drill pit
• Communicate with the locator/lead via radio to confirm the location of the drill head
• Assist with the install of proper pulling gear and hook up product
• Oversee laborers and/or crew member s work and monitor time usage
• Conduct post-job quality checks
• Follows specifications for the job and company policies
• Complies with safety procedures while driving and at job site
• Do basic math
• Use simple measuring devices
• Set up jobs on the machine
• Read blueprints to program and run work pieces
• Clean, check fluid levels and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure
vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety
• Perform the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required paperwork, perform
needed maintenance including winterizing equipment.

Working Conditions
• Transportation to out of town jobsites provided
• Communicates with Supervisor daily to turn in required paperwork (i.e. Bore log, vehicle
maintenance reports, etc.)
• May require travel and some weekends
• CDL License required

Physical Requirements
• Prior boring experience preferred
• This is a safety sensitive position.
• Work in extreme and inclement weather conditions
