Job Description

Overview:

The position includes physical requirements and ability to distinguish all colors used in telephone cable; ability to work aloft from ladders, platforms, poles (with climbers); and bucket trucks. This position must possess the ability to lift, carry, set up and secure a 28 foot ladder and the ability to load/transfer standard nitrogen cylinders. Work schedules are typically 5 days per week, 8 hours per day, or could be required to perform stand by duties or on call work assignments.

We work for a major telecom provider that offers a huge array of splicing situations all over our geographic area. We work on large cable transfers, paper cable, pic cable, maintenance, road moves and more. We work on all cables sizes, types and environments. We work regularly on DS0 and DS1 circuits, Adtran and Calix test and turn-up and more. Pauley values craftsmanship and reliability very highly. 

The position of Copper Splicer may report out of various regions/locations within Colorado.

Responsibilities:

Splicing copper cable for large cable transfers
Cable maintanence
Adtran and Calix testing and turn-up
Light labor including lifting manhole covers and barricading open manholes
Connection testing
Troubleshooting and repairing copper for customer
Splicing plant extensions
Repairing out of service drops to provide service to new and existing customers

Qualifications:

Splicing positions are broken down into the below three different levels. This specific posting is looking for either intermediate or journeyman level splicers.

Apprentice/Entry level

Must be 21 years old to operate company vehicles
Valid driver license and reliable transportation
Must pass company drug testing
Must know the color code system for cable pairs
Ability to work in confined spaces
Possesses strong analytical and problem solving skills
Ability to work with internal and external customers
Must have strong interpersonal communication skills to effectively communicate with product vendors and customers
Ability to work from oral or written instructions and plan work without direct supervision
Possesses proficient personal computer operations skills
Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and in various hours of the day or night and holidays as required
Must be able to respond to after-hours callouts, work overtime, shifts and weekends
Comply with all safety regulations and meet safety requirements to maintain a successful safety record
Ability to lift 50 lbs or less

Intermediate level

Knowledge of local cable facilities and fiber networks
Experience in Outside Plant telecom functions
Experience in how to read and interpret outside and subscriber plant facility records and engineering schematic work prints
Electronics training or experience that demonstrates knowledge of AC/DC theory
Working knowledge of analog and digital transmission
Experience in splicing fiber optics, copper cable (various splice connectors)
Working knowledge of direct termination of fiber-optic connectors including mechanical, anaerobic, epoxy polish, heat cured as well as pigtail splicing methods
Knowledge of bonding and grounding requirements of telecommunications plant
Working knowledge of ISP/OSP fiber optics terminations in splicing products in regards to appropriate application
Must be able to travel overnight as necessary to meet business and job requirements
Assist other technical personnel in the performance of their duties when requested
Ability to work with paper/pulp splicing, tagging and restoration
Ability to distinguish between different cable types (i.e., telecommunication, electrical, fiber, CATV, etc.)
Ability to build cable records, cut sheets and as-builts
Working knowledge of various test (Sidekick, 965 meter, DSP’s Exfo digital meter, Throw-master, OTDR’s

Advanced Crew Leader Level

Knowledgeable on all test equipment used to identify and locate optical and copper faults (OTDR/VFL and power meter operation)
Knowledge of and connect bulkheads, splice trays, organizers, kits and storage units
Ability to maintain and repair entire telephone loop/facilities
Ability to build span lines, install repeaters and perform tagging and testing functions on cable pairs to meet HDSL requirements
Ability to understand various electronic fiber mux and equipment
Proficient at working in aerial and buried outside plant environment

Duties outlined in this position will require the employee to stand, crouch, climb sit, bend, use hands and fingers to handle or feel as well as reaching with hands and arms to spaces both high and low. The employee will be standing, walking, climbing, balancing, crawling, crouching, lifting, holding or stooping while on shift.
Employees performing these job functions may be working from heights of 3 feet to 4 feet off the ground with proper safety equipment and/or personnel.
The noise level in the work environment for this position is moderate.
Employees performing functions of this position are regularly exposed to outside weather conditions which can include but is not limited to: extreme heat and cold temperatures; inclement weather such as rain, snow, sleet and dust as well as adverse driving conditions including wet roads, icy roads, and fog.
Employees performing these job functions may be required to lift or move up to 10 up to 50 pounds.
Employees in this job classification may be exposed to dust, fumes or other airborne pathogens.
Employees may be exposed to toxic or corrosive chemicals as well as moving machinery parts and pieces.
