Job Description and Responsibilities :
The Outside/Inside Design Engineer is responsible for all aspects of fiber design, mapping, and document generation for large MDU/MTU and network transformation projects.
Primary Responsibilities:
Interpret field survey drawing, notes, and pictures to compile proposed outside and inside fiber design in AutoCAD while adhering to client specifications and standards
Base-mapping including curb/gutter, centerline, span footages, building footprint, etc. (Street layout)
Calculate and design DB loss measurements and fiber assignments as outlined in client spec documents
Identify fiber counts at a strategic fiber access point and design a path through aerial, buried, and underground facilities
Manage and execute in depth preparation of all planning and required documentation to upload projects for customer quality control
Identity roadblocks caused by standards limitations or field survey inconsistencies and execute problem resolution and solutions based ideas to resolve field challenges
Identify City, County or State right-of-way permit requirements for each assigned project
Research customer, City, County or State resources to obtain utility information necessary for the creation of right-of-way permit packages
Create all permit application documentation and drawings, scaled and/or non-scaled, required for the completion of right-of-way permit packages
Submit final right-of-way permit packages digitally to customer or municipality
Interact with customer or municipality to resolve any permit updates, changes, corrections and/or concerns
Interface with the field surveyor and supervisor on day to day issues and meetings
Serve as a resource of information for all levels and departments within the Company
Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements :
Education:
High school diploma plus 4 years’ experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience:
Expert level understanding of MDU fiber design criteria and efficient design in customer applications
Ability to read and understand highway/road prints, and identify any conflicts with existing outside plant facilities
Proven experience with engineering in the public right-of-way and on private property
Prior experience with creating and obtaining City, County and State right-of-way permits for use in a utility environment (Cable, Telephone, Power or Water) is required
Technical Skills:
Highly skilled in customer applications: AutoCAD, ICGS, vBuild, BDMS, etc.
Ability to interface files: excel, google docs and AutoCAD
Basic mathematical skills and calculation ability are required
Soft Skills:
Highly organized and detail orientated
Ability to think analytically and apply sound judgment, solve problems, make effective decisions, and act with integrity
Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing
May be required to work long and unpredictable hours
Working on a computer for 6-8 hours a day
Sitting at a desk for 6-8 hours a day
