Qualifications
1-2 years of experience working as an aerial OSP groundman, lineman or a similar craft as a helper or laborer, and a basic knowledge of the telecom OSP craft. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Other Requirements
Must have all necessary small hand tools. Company provided new bucket trucks and new equipment.
Class A CDL Driver’s License
• DOT Certification
• Good driving record – ability to comply with Company Driving Policy
• Basic First Aid/CPR
Job Description
Installation, maintenance and testing of aerial outside plant fiber, pole attachment and down guy installation. Installation and attachment of new strand and aerial fiber as well as overlash fiber.
• Use appropriate hand and power tools to properly measure, cut, bend, assemble and erect all components necessary for lifting, moving and installing plant materials in accordance with the applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.
• Build aerial plant to customer specifications to include: framing poles, placing new strand, lashing new cable to bare strand, over lashing cable to existing strand and cable. Installing anchors and down guys, snow shoes, placing FST fiber terminals, grounding & bonding of strand, placement of riser guards, trimming trees, pulling of cable/fiber short distances in conduit, installing pole mounted cabinets, placing ground rods and installing VGR’s on poles, swapping lashers on poles either from a bucket truck or from hooks/ladders.
• Dismantles, moves, and removes aerial, underground or building wire, cable associated equipment and hardware.
• Connects wires and cables to terminals and attaches/detaches various kinds of hardware to wires, cables, buildings, or poles.
• Lead, complete, and sign off on daily pre-job safety planning in the appropriate format. Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or mitigate hazards. Assure all crew members understand, participate, and sign all pre-job safety planning tools at start and end of shift.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor. Participate in investigation process as needed. Review accidents and the causes with employees.
• Repairs and maintains major cable/fiber system and structures such as broken lashing, replacing or re-sagging aerial strand, pole transfers, down-guys, aerial to underground conversion, make ready, VGR’s and all grounding and bonding functions as per NEC code.
• Deploying and removing various traffic control devices that protect the work area while on a street or roadway.
• Bolt systems or equipment into place, using hand or power tools.
• Supervise ground hands to ensure safety and productivity.
• Complete weekly time sheets and production reports.
• Complete reports related to project status, progress, or other work details, using computer software.
• Participate, adhere to and support all safety related policies, processes and programs. Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries. Understand that no job is so important that your safety, the safety of your crew, or public safety will be compromised. Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional. If needed, use your stop work authority until the issue is resolved.
• Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (i.e. back-up alarms, smell of smoke or fumes, different colored warning tags, warning sirens).
• Read and understand work orders, blueprints, plans datasheets, site drawings and specifications. Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions. Must complete As-Built or redline documentation on prints.
• Complete performance reviews of craft workers according to Craft Performance Assessment (CPA) Guidelines.
• Inspect crew members’ work for compliance with the contract plans, specifications, and industry standards. Point out deficiencies, explain them, and take corrective action needed.
• Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost saving measures that arise or that may be encountered. Take corrective actions as needed reporting any issues to your supervision.
• Operates power equipment such as compressors, pumps, blowers, hydraulic diggers, and hydraulic aerial bucket trucks.
• Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.
• Perform all other actions necessary to accomplish the foregoing principal duties and accountabilities. This may require working in other crafts at levels appropriate to training and skills as requested by project supervision.
