Qualifications

A directional driller who can also manage and run all our underground work. Supervise and train others, communicate effectively with employees, the customer, and inspectors. He will evaluate the jobs, read prints, and organize the crew, He will do daily production reports and be computer literate. expert operator of a directional drill, locator, backhoe, missile, and shovel. Familiar with commercial vehicle regs and enforcement.

Other Requirements

CDL driver or capable of getting class A. Good driving record, fairly clean criminal background, good personal financial responsibility. Verifiable good references. optional: erosion and storm water control certs, traffic control supervisor card.

Job Description

We are looking for a directional driller who can also manage and run all our underground work.
He should be able to supervise and train others, communicate effectively with employees, the customer, and inspectors. He will evaluate the jobs, read prints, and organize the crew,or crews, for maximum productivity.
He will do daily production reports in Excel and use Microsoft excel and word easily.
By delegation and spot checks he will make sure all required daily equipment and vehicle inspections and maintenance are done.
He needs to be an expert operator of a directional drill, locator, backhoe, excavator, vibratory plow, missile, and sometimes a shovel. He should be very familiar with commercial vehicle regulations or able to learn them quickly, and be willing to enforce them.

Personal financial responsibility, verifiable good references from previous employers, or customers, and a pretty clean criminal history and driving record are required. An Erosion and Storm Water Control Certification, and a Traffic Control supervisor card will be very useful.
We are aware the we may not find one a person who has all the experience, skills, and credentials we need. We will hire the person who has the most and they will acquire the rest.
Smith Cable Systems has been in business in Alaska since 1986. Our full time employees have medical insurance, paid vacations, and a Simple IRA retirement savings plan. We have never missed a payroll or bounced a check. Several guys come from the lower 48 states every year to work for us seasonally, and make as much in 8 or 9 months as they could working all year outside Alaska.
We work all over Alaska. Last year we had crews in Ketchikan, Cordova, Valdez, Fairbanks, Prudhoe Bay, and Barrow. Some years we have twenty guys doing construction, and some years half that number.
Fairbanks is home base to our construction crews. When working in Fairbanks the guys stay in company provided apartments, and receive a per diem for food, currently $35 per day. When working outside the Fairbanks area, hotel rooms and a per diem to match local costs are provided. We pay for all travel to, from, and within Alaska. Travel within Alaska to and from jobsites is on the clock. We provide one round trip ticket home mid-season for the out of state guys.
