Job Description
The fiber splicing technician should have a broad understanding of all aspects of fiber optic cable splicing including, but not limited to, the following:
-Fusion and mechanical splicing techniques;
-Splice enclosures;
-Fiber optic cable routing in an OSP environment;
-Splicing documentation and review;
-Characteristics of single-mode, multi-mode and hybrid fiber optic
cables;
-Knowledge and inspection of common connector types;
-Use and calibration of testing instruments for fiber optic cable;
-Field testing and interpretation of test results;
-Test and interpret OTDR measurements;
-Conduct and interpret reflectance measurements;
-Test, certify and troubleshoot fiber optic cable systems; and
-Aerial and underground construction equipment operation.
EQUIPMENT OPERATION REQUIREMENTS
Equipment operation requirements for this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Fiber optic cable fusion and mechanical splicing and OTDR equipment;
-Aerial equipment such as climbers, lashers, safety straps, rubber insulating equipment, and bucket trucks; and
-Underground equipment such as digger derricks, backhoes, trenchers, hydrovacuum excavators, shovels, bore rigs, mini-track excavators, wind-up equipment, and various hand and power tools.
