Qualifications
The ideal candidate for OSP Engineer will be qualified to survey and design fiber optic facilities in aerial and buried applications. Minimum 5 Years’ Experience. Understand how to do accurate OSP Estimates. Must have the ability to draft (using AutoCad, Microstation, Visio, M4, other)) in order to create, process, and submit city, county, DOH Permits. Thorough Understanding of VDOT permit process, with many successful submissions.
Through Understanding right of way’s and easement negotiations.
Other Requirements
Need own Vehicle, Measuring Devices (Laser, Wheel, Height stick 40' minimum) Computer with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)
Job Description
The OSP Design Engineer performs all aspects of OSP engineering for fiber projects from Inception to Customer Turn up.
OSP Estimates, Design of CLEC Fiber, Including but not limited to, Route planning, Research, Field Survey, Data collection, CAD, Permitting to power, phone, and public utilities; railroads, cities, governments, and the Army Corps of Engineers; federal forests, state highway and turnpike authorities, negotiating easements and Building access. Follow up to Construction, and resolution, of any unforeseen issues, prior to and after construction.
Desired Skills and Expertise
The ideal candidate for OSP Design Engineer will be qualified to survey and design fiber optic facilities in aerial, underground and buried applications.
• Position includes both field and design work.
• Requires proficiency with permitting and R/W experience.
• Knowledgeable Engineer will be onsite for kick-off meetings / site walks.
• Design work needs to be returned in CAD format within tight deadlines of the site meeting.
• Permit drawings must be assembled and submitted.
• Professional appearance a must.
Must be a Self-Starter and meet a majority of the skills, knowledge, and experience requirements outlined below:
- Experience in fiber service jobs such as FTTCS, FTTB, GPON, FTTH.
- Experience Working with outside agencies to obtain right of way approvals and coordinate projects with other utilities.
- Experience Researching and Acquiring permits or private easements

- Must be able to determine, best route, and method of build (Aerial / Buried) design
- Understanding of the make ready process for Power, Telco and CLEC’s. – be able to identify and resolve conflicts within NESC guidelines
- Able to Create Pole Permits with proper Make Ready analysis, including Matching Maps, with GPS coordinates.
- Must Understand Guying and use of the Pull Device and Guy Rule..

- Support the design and engineering process by planning and preparing drawings for construction of new build.
- Complete designs in accordance to customer specifications and guidelines
- May be required to provide on-site construction inspection to ensure design specifications are met.
- Update Client Records as needed.
- Perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products – especially: Outlook, Word, Excel, and Visio
- Must have experience with programs such as: CAD, M4, and able to create acceptable digital work.
- Engineer must provide own equipment, to include: Computer, Height Stick, Measuring Wheel, pull device, and Guy Rule.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States of America.
