Qualifications
Requisite Skills and Knowledge:
•Must have 2 years directional drill experience as a drill operator or locator.
•Must have basic operating experience with heavy equipment.
Physical Requirements:
•Work outside in all types of weather
•Required to frequently stand, walk, and sit.
•Required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel or crouch to wire cables and string wire.
Other Requirements
Miscellaneous Skills / Considerations:
•A valid driver’s license and CDL Class A preferred
•Meet ACI driving criteria guidelines
•Must be able to pass a background check, per company policy.
•Must be a drug free individual
•Must be strongly mechanically inclined.
Job Description
The OSP Underground Technician will be performing directional drill operations. This individual must be able to use a utility locator to find existing UG services. This individual must also have general knowledge of local and federal utility locating laws (eg: Michigan MISSDIG laws) and requirements for Directional Drill operations. The OSP Underground Technician needs to have general knowledge of Class A vehicles and the required MDOT procedures of operating the vehicle.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the following tasks:
•Installs new or replacement coax cable by methods of Directional Drill or Hand digging.
•Perform construction work such as digging holes, placing poles, laying cable in the ground, unreeling, pulling and stringing wire and cable from pole to pole by perceiving differences in wire and cable colors to place fiber cable from Central Office through conduit or attach pole lines to customer business or distribution points in the loop.
•Dismantle, move or remove aerial, underground or building wire/cable, using necessary equipment, poles and hardware as per customer and supervisory order.
•Work with heavy-duty power equipment and hand tools in the construction, repair and maintenance of outside plant facilities by loading tools and equipment onto trucks and/or trailers, moving, lifting, or pulling weights of 100 pounds or more to operate power equipment such as compressors, pumps, blowers, winches and hydraulic equipment such as aerial lifts (buckets), diggers, directional bore rigs, and trenchers. Must be able to lift or move manhole covers or similar items.
•Maintain thorough and current proficiency of FCC and performance specifications, and can, without supervision, initiate and complete comprehensive testing including (but not limited to) all FCC required or recommended tests and measurements
•Locate customer facilities, responsible for the correct, safe and efficient locating and marking of underground utilities by thoroughly searching for underground plant in an area, properly mark the location, and complete the necessary paperwork.
•Communicate with customers, supervisors and upper management and throughout OBU staff, using formal language via email, personally or phone to help maintain code and guidelines of the company and to communicate job status and issues surrounding daily activities. Required to complete and supply necessary documentation for daily reporting.
•Adheres to all company employee safety, and customer rules and policies. This includes, but is not limited to, appearance codes and vehicle policies.
•Creates and promotes a team environment by assisting and encouraging fellow technicians to help each other likewise to reflect a participative and interactive team inside and outside the OBU.
•Performs all other duties as assigned.
