Pay
$20.00 per hour to start. Raises will be evaluated on a performance based evaluation after 90 days.
Qualifications
Applicants must have prior experience with fiber splicing. BICSI training or equivalent is preferred.
Other Requirements
Applicant must have a clean, valid drivers license and transportation. Mandatory drug testing is required prior to hire with random testing as deemed necessary by management. The ability to tow a splice trailer is also preferable.
Job Description
This is an outline of the expectations and capabilities required to fulfill the position of Splicer’s Assistant
1) Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the Splicing Trailer and Tow Vehicle and perform daily maintenance as required.
2) Seek training and become proficient in towing and parking the Splice Trailer.
3) Maintain the inventory of splicing materials and consumables inside the trailer and warehouse.
4) Maintain the cleanliness of the splicing tools, toolbox and equipment.
5) To aid the Splicer in all manners related to:
a. Traffic Control
- To know how to deploy all traffic signage, cones, pedestrian barricades and arrow board.
- To be knowledgeable of safe traffic control implementation
b. Set Up
- To be knowledgeable of how to properly set up a manhole and use blowers and gas detectors
- To be able to efficiently aid the splicer in all manner of cable prep.
c. Cable Management & Labeling
- To be able to safely remove cables and cases from Manholes making sure they are safe from damage from vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
- To be able to neatly rack and secure splice cases in manholes.
- To make sure that all cables, cases and fibers are accurately labeled.
d. Case & Splice Documentation
- To make sure that all splices and case locations are accurately documented on the worksheets provided
e. Case Retrieval & Racking
- To make sure that safety to personnel and existing cabling is always practiced.
- To be knowledgeable with cable and case racking procedures.
f. Fiber Prep
- To be capable of removing all types of cable sheaths, buffer tubes and central ribbon fiber tubes.
- To learn and be proficient in Splice case and LIU (patch panel) preparation.
- To learn and be proficient in neat Fiber routing in splice cases and LIU”s.
- To Learn and be proficient in cable management in data rooms and racks.
- To make sure that your work space stays clean and is left clean at completion of each project.
g. Equipment Repairs or Adjustments
- It is the assistant’s responsibility to report any damage to, or malfunctions of, the splice trailer, tow vehicle, splice equipment and tools.
- To be knowledgeable in the basic maintenance and adjustments to the splicing equipment and tools.
h. Safety & Uniform
- To know the safe operation of tool and equipment provided to the splice crew
- To be in position of and wear the safety clothing issued at time of hire including: Hardhat, safety vest, and protective eyewear.
- To wear issued Uniform and provide protective footwear.
i. Testing
- To know the proper procedures for testing fiber Optic Cable with an OTDR, and Light source and Power Meter.
j. Reporting
- To achieve the knowledge to be able to take the Raw Data from the previously mentioned tests and to be able to use computer software to produce “customer ready” reports
6) To learn how to read and implement Splicing Matrix
7) To learn how to operate and maintain all splicing and testing equipment
8) To learn how to perform Bi directional tests, visual fault location, OTDR fault location and report generation using a computer.
It is BlueStar Technologies expectation that you will strive to achieve the ability to learn splicing and testing procedures so that you may perform basic splicing and testing independently as needed. It is also our goal to sufficiently train you to become an independent splicer.
