Surry Telephone Membership Corporation is seeking a regular full-time Headend/CATV Technician for our Reeds, NC location. A high school degree or equivalent is required with minimum two years at a technical college or combination of education/experience equal to 3-5 years.
Position requires a thorough knowledge of video head end design, management, and testing. Must also be knowledgeable in outside plant utilizing coaxial cable and fiber optic transmission technologies.

JOB DESCRIPTION NO. 30
POSITION TITLE: Headend/CATV Technician
REPORTS TO: Chief Technology Officer
FUNCTION: Install, repair, upgrade, monitor and operate all headend components associated with the distribution of off-air, satellite, and locally originated programming to the outside plant utilizing coaxial cable and fiber optic transmission technologies. This includes support for edge devices including data modems and their interface into the customer’s home network.
l. TYPICAL DUTIES
a. Install, maintain, provision, monitor and adjust all headend equipment required for video, CATV telephony, high speed data communications and networking. Equipment includes but not limited to earth stations, antennas, receivers, modulators, fiber optics, ad insertion, CMTS, DOCIS modems and set top boxes.
b. Routinely checks and monitors all RF levels and alignment to assure that all FCC requirements are met.
c. Maintains adequate records including proof of performance and files all required reports to the FCC.
d. Ensure quick departmental response to, and restoration of, outages and network interruptions.
e. Analyze and troubleshoot problems using the available test equipment.
f. Assist and mentor plant technicians in the pursuit of timely trouble resolutions.
g. Provide technical software and hardware support to customers and their video and data networks.
h. Interface with other company personal to assist with provisions of service and maintenance on STMC and affiliates provided services.
2. PERIODIC DUTIES
a. Maintain all company owned towers, antennas and satellite dishes.
b. Maintain headend location in a neat, clean and orderly manner. Perform minor details, such as painting and material replacement, to maintain buildings and housings. Report major repair needs to the department head.
c. Maintain headend equipment inventory.
d. Perform annual FCC testing.
e. Assist in the upkeep and storage of "test gear". Maintain test gear in maximum ready state for operations.
f. Perform service calls to Customer Premises when requested by dispatch, management, or when determined needed to resolve service issues to customer’s satisfaction
g. Assist in and train employees and customers on broadband and video services provided.
h. Read, comprehend and develop system maps, plans or other documentation as required by the system.
i. Participate in rotation of 24 X 7 on call duty.
j. Work with small components and wires to make cable connections requiring close vision with good hand to eye coordination.
3. EQUIPMENT OPERATED
a. Operates company owned vehicle.
b. Operates test equipment required to maintain headend such as sweep meter, OTDR, power meter, signal level meter, spectrum analyzer, QAM analyzer and other miscellaneous equipment.
c. Personal computers, peripheral equipment associated with PCs, interface equipment that includes but not limited to modems, router (wired and wireless) and protectors.

4. JOB KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
a. High school graduate or equivalent is required. An Associate Degree in electronic or Data switching is preferred. A combination of experience and education will be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
b. Employee must have through knowledge of RF (Radio Frequency), HFC (Hybrid-Fiber Coax) and Fiber optic operations.
c. Employee must have knowledge of IP networks and fundamentals of TCP/IP protocols.
d. Combination of three to five years prior experience in a Headend is required. NCTI and SCTE courses will be considered towards experience requirement.
d. Employee must progress his/her skills upward as determined by management during their tenure as Headend/CATV Technician. Participation in out of area system support, trainings, meetings, etc. may be required.
5. AUTHORITY
a. Employee works under direct instruction from the Chief Technical Officer. Generally, work is assigned by dispatch for daily routine assignments. Individual judgment and initiative is required throughout a workday to accomplish objectives and assignments.
b. Employee works alone much of the workday. Judgment is required in setting priorities and determining when to contact manager for assistance to accomplish assigned work.
6. PHYSICAL EFFORT
a. Climbing ladders, stooping, bending, pulling, and lifting weights over fifty pounds are required.
b. Ability to climb towers and perform jobs from high places. (i.e. towers and roofs).
c. Ability to work in confined spaces such as crawl spaces and attics by crawling, bending, reaching and twisting.
7. WORKING CONDITIONS
a. Approximately 70 per cent of the work is in a controlled environment. The remainder is in an outside or in buildings without heat or air condition environment.
b. Outside work may be required in inclement weather conditions. This can include, but not limited to wind, dust, rain, snow, sleet, heat, and cold temperatures.
c. Some work is required on public highway right-of-way. Exposures to dangerous vehicle traffic are required.
d. Employee may be exposed to poison vines, insects and snakes during job performance.
e. Employee may be exposed to dangerous high electrical voltage from time to time during routine work.
f. Employee is required to work after normal schedule hours to restore outage of equipment effecting service to customer(s).
8. REPORTING

b. Vehicle mileage driven.
c. On the job personal injuries.
d. On the job accident(s).
e. Hazardous and unsafe work conditions or work zones.
