Scope of Position:
Apply knowledge of fiber optic principles and practices to effectively accomplish technical assignments and projects. Makes decisions independently based upon sound engineering and scientific methods. Actively participates within and beyond department boundaries to resolve important process and product issues. Independently executes projects to fulfill department goals and objectives.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
Provide day-to-day problem solving support to Professional Services operations
Identify process improvement and cost reduction projects based on analysis of process data. The individual is expected to utilize the scientific method to develop, test, and prove hypotheses.
Prepare cost justifications and capital requests for any new equipment purchases that may be required to achieve project goals.
Individual must be able to interface with operators, team leaders and peers to develop and implement process, equipment, or safety improvements into Fiber Characterizations LOB.
Develop maintenance and operator training documentation, conducting equipment qualification and initial training of production personnel, and making provisions for repair parts stocking levels. Formally document all aspects of the project
Individual must be able to read and Analyze Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) traces, evaluate characteristics of fiber, and document test results.
Individual must be able to communicate verbally with construction subcontractors regarding proper testing procedures
Individual must be able to coordinate subcontractors, materials, inspectors, tools, and equipment to complete projects on schedule and within budget.
Individual must be able to review, analyze, and resolve field testing problems and discrepancies.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate at technical and non-technical levels
Excellent presentation skills
Ability to work independently and to follow through on projects
Ability to read interpret engineering drawings
Some CAD drawing capability is required
Familiarity with fiber optic testing procedures, cleaning and maintenance is desired
FC or Specialty certifications highly desirable
Knowledge of optical fiber telecommunications, data center and LAN requirements such as the current TIA, IEEE and IEC standards
Ability to travel - - potentially 75% of the time

Work environment:
Work primarily will be in a climate controlled type atmosphere. Occasionally, work will be done either outside or in non-heated or non-air conditioned buildings, presenting possible extremes of hot and cold. The employee will be working in a variety of environments including some that have many special rules and procedures which must be followed at all times. The position may require heavy lifting, climbing and heavy physical exertion.
Individual must provide field representation to customers including field consultations for testers, start-up, troubleshooting, field change-orders, user orientation and training, warranty and repair service.
Individual must be able evaluate the functional status of installed products and systems. Identify, analyze, and resolve problems with installed cabling system and connectivity products
Individual must be able to pinpoint customer and end user requirements through personal interaction and by establishing trust and rapport in the field as an expert in fiber technology.
Individual must be able to provide careful documentation of work done in field service activities for billing, warranty, customer service and R&D purposes
Individual must be able to create technical CAD / Visio drawing/diagrams, and other documentation, for pre-sales or product support.
Individual must be able to provide remote technical support as necessary to perform field service and additional assistance as required.
Individual must be able to travel by road, and occasionally by air, including some 8+ hour days and multi-day trips, to carry out field service activities.
Individual must be able to provide technical support by telephone conference, or through visits, to installers, users and third-party service providers.
Individual must be able to team with Sales Managers, and Strategic Account Managers to identify potential fiber projects and to build strong customer relationships
Individual must be able to perform other similar and related duties as required.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED
BS degree from an accredited U.S college or university in Computers and / or Engineering (Preferred) or equivalent work experience (5 to 10 years in Fiber optics and testing)
Completed Trade School or Two Year Degree in Basic Electronics
Knowledge and software experience with Microsoft Office, Fiber Trace, Fiber Cable and Fast Reporter
