Qualifications

A minimum of one year experience in fiber optic or utility construction is required. Knowledge of and experience with construction procedures and operation of heavy construction equipment, as it pertains to installation of fiber optic cable both underground & aerial are required. Requires a valid driver’s license and be insurable. Some out of town travel and overnight travel required.

Other Requirements

Must obtain Class A CDL within 90 days of hire.

Job Description

Position Summary

Reporting to the project Foreman, the Equipment Operator is responsible for working in a safe manner & assisting entire crew to ensure projects are completed in a timely and cost effective manner. This individual is responsible for operating heavy and light construction equipment, including backhoes, mini excavators, and other types of machinery, and ensures preventative maintenance of these, as required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

•Inspect vehicles and equipment prior to and after use, including checking fluid levels and tire pressure to ensure their safe & proper operation. Perform minor preventative maintenance, such as greasing equipment, as required.
•Drive trucks & equipment to job sites
•Dig /drill holes & trenches using power equipment
•Adhere to company policies, procedures and OSHA safety standards.
•Comply with construction codes and standards.
•Assist Foreman in ensuring jobs are brought in on time
•Notify foreman of unanticipated field changes & suggest possible alternatives
•Document deficiencies in safety practices/equipment to foreman
•Demonstrate willingness for continuous self-improvement
•Perform work in quality & workmanlike manner, with minimal supervision.
•Assist in training new employees as directed
•Maintain an open & friendly demeanor with fellow employees & customers
•Assist in preparing reports on project status & crew activities. May perform other administrative work as required utilizing computer or laptop & integrated software
• Assist in coordinating & performing confined space entry in compliance with approved departmental policy & industry approved safety procedures in designated confined spaces
•Perform on call duties as required
•Obtain a Class A CDL (including air brake and tanker endorsements), and Medical Card within 90 days of hire. Must maintain a good driver’s record and be insurable.
•Other duties as may be necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

Must be able to: plan, prioritize, and organize work effectively; work under pressure and time deadlines; analyze problems, propose reasonable solutions; make logical decisions, carry out decisions made; and communicate effectively, both written and orally. Ability to read blue prints, maps and construction prints is required, along with the ability to accurately follow both oral and written instructions. Out of town travel and overnight travel occasionally required.
