Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Splices and repairs various types of communication cables
Locates and corrects faults in cable conductors and cable sheath, including work required for preventative maintenance.
Installs and maintains cable terminals, load coils, etc.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS

Knowledge of basic electricity, as it relates to telecommunications (through classes or on-the-job training), which includes: knowledge related to the basic principles, theories, and applications of electricity (e.g., voltage, current, resistance, power, grounding, insulation. Ohm’s Law, AC/DC); knowledge of basic electrical components (e.g., conductors, insulators, switches, capacitors, inductors, transformers) and basic circuit design; and knowledge of the operation and application of common electrical components and common measurement instruments (e.g., multi-meters).
Ability to splice and maintain both copper and fiber cables.
Ability to property secure splice cases (air tight). Needs to have a clear understanding and have experience working and troubleshooting the air- pressure system from the air dryer compressors in the CO, to the air flow manifolds in the Man-Holes.
Working knowledge of hand and power tools.
Working knowledge of test equipment (e.g. volt-ohm meters, transmission measuring sets).
Experience with various test equipment such as 3M 965DSP, Acterna HST3000, Fusion splicing machine, OTDR, and 3M MS2 splicing equipment or comparable.
Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and at various hours of the day.
General experience with and knowledge of basic cable splicing
Experience with reading work prints and schematics
Strive for satisfactory customer service by performing such duties as: cable maintenance, installation, removal, rearrangement and maintenance of single and dual line services and associated apparatus equipment, up to and including cross connection to the switching equipment; single & multi channel subscriber carrier systems; performs other related duties.
Ability to maintain and repair span lines, including repeaters or doublers and performing test and tag functions on cable pairs to qualify Video and DATA service.
Ability to maintain and repair entire POTS/Data/Video loop/facilities
Knowledge of analog and digital transmission.
Must possess the ability to work in confined spaces
Ability to use established electrical, digital, and/or mechanical principles and to perform appropriate tests to identify and solve problems encountered on the job.
Ability to efficiently and accurately work with multiple types of information and/or perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
Ability to complete designated amount of work in a specified timeframe (e.g. quality jobs per day), adjusting work assignments or schedules to meet changing work-related priorities or demands.
Ability to work well with others to achieve common goals and to foster a cooperative climate, as well as to work independently in the field with little supervision.
Possess/maintain valid driver’s license
Satisfactorily complete company sponsored training.
Possess good attendance, work and safety record
Meet physical requirements: Able to distinguish all colors used in telephone cable, work aloft from ladders, platforms, poles (w/climbers), bucket trucks safely, lift 75 lbs from ground level to chest height, lift & safely carry, set up & secure 75 lb ladder, ability to load transport a standard nitrogen cylinder or equivalent.
Possess strong analytical & problem solving skills
Accept call-outs & work overtime as a condition of employment.
Work from oral and written instructions with the ability to plan work without direct supervision
Possess proficient personal computer operation skills.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work involves standing, talking, hearing, using hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reaching with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk (10%), sit (5%), climb (5%), balance (5%), grasp (15%), stand (15%), stoop (5%), kneel (5%), drive (20%), reach (5%), fine manipulation (10%) push 2%, pull 2% lift 1%. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment; and ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
The employee must frequently lifts and/or carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally will lift and/or carry up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perceptions and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in inclement weather conditions.
The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.
The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
Ability to follow all ITC’s policies and procedures per Employee Handbook and Harassment Policy for the duration of employee’s employment.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

At least 36 months of experience installing, maintaining/repairing, and testing residential/small business broadband products such as HIS, VDSL, Fiber to the Prem., IPTV, and High Definition. At least twelve (12) months of experience connecting telecom color-coded wires and cables to terminals attaching or detaching various kinds of hardware to wires, cables, buildings and poles.
At least 200 hours of classroom training on different types of cable closures (i.e. aerial, man holes and sidewalk boxes.)
Job requires specialized advanced vocational skills (generally non-theoretical) acquired on or off the job, typically gained through a combination of education and relevant experience, totaling 4 post –high school or equivalent.
High School Graduate or equivalent, Associate Electronics Degree or 3 years work related experience or must have completed a minimum of 12 college credit hours of job related courses in computer science or electronics.
