Job Description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Fiber Technician position is a mid-level to senior level construction worker that can perform both aerial and underground cable and fiber installation work, splice fiber, and has a good working knowledge of GO95 and GO128 rules and regulations. In addition, the Fiber Technician will be expected to undertake a lead and/or foreman role in the field for both aerial and underground fiber related work, as it relates to the fiber trees and cut sheets.
JOB DUTIES
Main Duties:
• Terminate, splice, and install a variety of fiber optic cable, connectors, enclosures and mid-sheath entries.
• Install termination panels within end users facilities
• Proficient in using data and fiber optic test equipment including fusion splicer, power meter and OTDR
• Knowledge of applicable electronic equipment and specialty tools
• Ability to troubleshoot effectively and efficiently, specifically in outage situations
• Ability to train assigned personnel for fiber splicing
• Ability to read, understand and update splice documentation and maps
• Work between the hours of 10:00p.m. - 7:00a.m. as needed, including stand by hours
• Climb and use ladders on poles for cable and fiber projects
• Perform all aerial construction activities, including but not limited to, installing aerial coax, aerial fiber, completing pole transfers, and performing GO95 cleanup work
• Pull new cable/fiber through conduits and pull safely with no kinks in the cable/fiber
• Ability to travel and stay overnight within the coverage area
• Organize and execute a fiber team to respond to emergency fiber outages
• Ability to work under pressure in outage situations in order to complete splicing requirements within a four (4) hour window
• Perform other related duties as required
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the Main Duties satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
Education and/or Experience: Minimum of two (2) years in cable construction and/or engineering experience with a thorough understanding of all aspects relative to HFC architectures.
Management Skills: Accomplished team player and leader with strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Must possess the ability to develop, motivate and train employees.
Travel Required: Yes
License Required: Valid California Driver’s license
Vehicle Required: Yes (unless employee is assigned a Company Vehicle)
Insurance Requirement: Must demonstrate adequate proof of insurance and registration for personal vehicle or must be insurable under the Company’s Vehicle Insurance Policy if assigned a Company Vehicle.
Suitability Determination: Background Check and/or Physical/Drug Testing may be required for this position.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, write, and effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, employees and the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
