JOB DESCRIPTION HEAD-END TECHNICIAN

SUMMARY
This position is responsible for all aspects of installation and maintenance of equipment within a cable television headend. Required to optimize incoming signals from wide variety of sources and process for redistribution to cable systems. Reception and distribution mechanisms include; satellite, off-air antenna, microwave, coaxial cable, fiber. Required to work on-call.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Work closely with field and NOC employees in determining source of signal impairments and facilitates repair of problems as they are located.

Install and align satellite dishes. Includes fine tuning of feed horns and replacement of low noise block converters. May include multi-feed assemblies.

Install, replace, and align various types of off-air antennas for VHF and UHF television and radio reception.

Maintain, adjust and document video carrier levels, audio video ratio, depth of modulation, audio deviation.

Utilize computer software and test equipment for variety of measurements including: satellite alignment, RF levels, signal to noise, carrier to noise, low frequency disturbances, composite triple beat, composite and discrete second order beat, depth of modulation and audio deviation.

Perform proactive and reactive monitoring of all the fundamental tasks required in the testing and analysis of all elements of the network equipment and facilities.

Proficient in setup and operation of headend equipment including but not limited to: signal processors, modulators, demodulators, satellite receivers, integrated receiver descramblers, digital receivers, transcoders, combining and splitting networks, laser transmitters, fiber optic receivers.

Familiar with setup and operation of cable modem termination systems, cable modems, and basic networking equipment. Able to work closely with network engineers to facilitate proper operation, maintenance, and restoration of high speed data network.

Responsible for monitoring headend cooling and coordinates with air-conditioning specialists to maintain proper system operation.

Install, maintain, and test emergency alert systems.

Test and maintain backup powering systems- including generators, uninterruptible power supplies, and temporary feeds.

Responsible for insuring the proper tower and site maintenance schedule is followed.

Responsible for insuring proper OTN operation and that the maintenance schedule is followed.

Familiar with optical splice patch panels, optical couplers, and appropriate optical connector handling and cleaning procedures.

Utilize optical time domain reflectometer to perform splice acceptance tests as well as fault location.

Proficient with software programs for storage and archival of test equipment results.

Compliance with system operating specifications as well as applicable governmental regulations.

Maintain accurate and complete headend documentation.

Responsible for maintaining the headend in a clean and orderly manner.

Ability to keep to schedule with minimum supervision.

Performs all the job requirements of all technical field personnel.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree (A. A.) in Electronics or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Prior successful completion or ability to successfully complete within a given timeframe the NCTI “Test and Measurement” course.
Prior successful completion or ability to successfully complete within a given timeframe the NCTI “Advanced Technician” course.
Master Technician certification is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus and color vision.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock.

OTHER
Performs overnight scheduled and demand maintenance work in the headend and OTN sites as needed.
Must possess a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company.
