Job Description
Position Overview
Sage Ground Works is a growing, core valued company seeking a CDL Driver with Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) crew experience to join and thrive with our construction and utility installation team. This role combines safe operation of commercial vehicles with active participation in HDD field operations. Candidates with prior drilling and locating experience are strongly preferred, as cross-training and flexibility within the crew are essential. The position will require travel at times, with per diem and housing provided by Sage Ground Works.
Key Responsibilities
Driving & Equipment Transport
• Operate CDL-class trucks and trailers to haul drilling rigs, vac trailers, support trucks, and equipment to and from job sites.
• Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, load securement standards, and company safety policies.
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections, maintain driver logs, and report any mechanical issues promptly.
HDD Crew Operations
• Assist with setup, operation, and breakdown of HDD drilling equipment and support systems.
• Work alongside drill operators and locators in day-to-day trenchless installation of underground utilities (fiber, conduit, etc.).
• Safely handle drilling fluids, recycling systems, and vac equipment.
• Support restoration activities including backfilling, compacting, and site cleanup.
Driller & Locator Support (Preferred Skills)
• Operate HDD rig under the supervision of the crew foreman or lead driller.
• Interpret utility maps, prints, and locate data to ensure safe and accurate bore paths.
• Perform utility potholing and verification to prevent strikes or service interruptions.
• Troubleshoot equipment, ground conditions, and bore path challenges in real time.
Skills & Competencies
• Strong commitment to safety, situational awareness, and crew accountability.
• Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn equipment operation.
• Effective communication with foreman, crew members, and project managers.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing schedules and priorities.
• Room to grow with the company, but must be afraid to pick up a shovel if need be and get the job done.
Required:
Class A CDL, clean record
Pass DOT drug/alcohol test & medical cert
1–2 yrs commercial vehicle/trailer experience
Lift 50+ lbs, work outdoors, perform physical labor
Preferred:
HDD crew experience
Knowledge of drill ops, locators (DigiTrak, Subsite), vac systems
Utility construction, safety, traffic control familiarity
OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, or related certs
