Job Description
Site Assessment and Utility Location: Before any digging, the technician assesses the route the cable will take. They call "811" (or the appropriate local number) to have public utility lines (like gas, water, and power) marked with colored flags or paint. The customer is typically responsible for marking private utilities like sprinkler systems or invisible dog fences.
Trenching or Boring: The technician uses specialized equipment to create a narrow trench or bore a hole for the cable.
Vibratory Plow: This machine creates a thin slit in the ground and feeds the cable into it, all in one pass. It's the most common and least disruptive method for lawns.
Boring: For more difficult areas like under a driveway, sidewalk, or street, a directional boring machine is used. This method drills a hole horizontally underground to pass the cable through without disturbing the surface.
Hand Digging: In some cases, such as in gardens or small, confined spaces, the technician may use hand tools to bury the cable.
Cable Burial and Restoration: The cable is buried at a specific depth to protect it. Once the cable is in the ground, the technician covers the trench and restores the area as close to its original condition as possible. This may include tamping down the soil and placing any removed sod back into place.
Final Checks: After the cable is buried, the technician performs a final check to ensure the connection is working properly and that the job site is clean and safe.
