Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or specialized training in drilling operations preferred. Minimum 2 years' experience operating horizontal directional drill rigs and using locating equipment. CDL Class A or B with Tanker Endorsement required. Ability to pass pre-employment background checks, drug screenings, motor vehicle checks, and DOT physical exams.
Other Requirements
Proficiency with HDD rigs and associated locating technology. Skilled in reading, interpreting, and applying const. drawings and bore plans. Advanced understanding of underground telecommunications infrastructure and NESC standards. Competent in using smartphones, tablets, and laptops for documentation and communication purposes. Able to work outdoors in various weather conditions, lift, and handle equipment weighing up to 90 lbs. Comfortable working in confined spaces and around heavy machinery
Job Description
Overview:
Reporting to the Fiber Construction (Operations) Manager or Project Manager, the Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator/Locator is responsible for operating and precisely locating directional drilling equipment associated with underground fiber optic infrastructure. This role requires advanced technical skills and experience with Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar drilling equipment, mixing systems, locating tools, and bore planning. The Operator/Locator ensures high-quality, accurate installations while adhering to all safety protocols, industry standards, and project specifications.
Operational Duties:
Operate and manage horizontal directional drill rigs, including setup, bore operation, and teardown.
Utilize locating equipment effectively to ensure accurate placement of conduits.
Conduct bore planning and maintain comprehensive bore logs/documentation.
Perform daily maintenance checks and ensure all drilling and locating equipment are in optimal condition.
Field and Support Activities:
Prepare and manage job sites to ensure safe, organized, and compliant operations.
Handle materials and operate related tools and equipment, including trenchers, hydro-vacs, and excavators.
Assist with the placement of conduits, fiber optic cables, underground vaults, pedestals, and site restoration.
Implement traffic control measures to maintain job site safety.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere strictly to OSHA standards, safety protocols, company policies, and industry regulations.
Participate actively in daily safety meetings and ensure consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Documentation and Communication:
Accurately document bore logs, equipment maintenance, daily activities, and project progress.
Communicate effectively with project management, field teams, and clients to ensure clarity and precision in task execution.
Soft Skills:
Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Preferred Certifications:
