Job Description

Telecommunications Planning and Design Specialist perform project assessments and apply hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) design principles to a variety of outside and inside plant coaxial and fiber optic projects. Duties include performing the planning, outside & Inside construction methods, designing and tracking for multiple cabling projects consisting of fiber optic and coaxial cable systems to support Tacoma Power SCADA, Utility Technology Services, CityNET, Tacoma Water, and another outside entities when requested
Job Responsibilities:
Engineering & Design of capital projects consisting of road projects, conversions, new pole strand & lash, & conduit layouts.
Coordinate, engineer, design, plan & track expedited fiber projects due to damage, resulting in a timely restoration.
Engineer Fiber Network for one-way circuits, and ring architecture, including fiber assignments.
Acquire permits when needed
Knowledge of field construction practices
Create, track, engineer & design work order project packets for HFC Construction including mapping, materials & construction notes.
Coordinate with other work groups to complete requested services, consisting of cost estimates, project planning, & work orders.
Coordinate with Rainier Connect on updates, tracking, as builts & mapping.
Effective communication with internal & external customers, attend field meetings, virtual meetings, coordinate with all parties involved.
Follow processes and procedures for various project types.
Prepare and present written and oral reports or presentations as required
Create and maintain system design mapping updates in SpatialNET GIS software.
Provide map updates of system to be used by field staff and Tacoma Power underground system locators
Attend industry seminars and training sessions
Participate in industry standards meetings
Serve as a technical consultant to other departments as required
Knowledge & Skills
Effective use of a personal computer and familiarity with computer programs including SpatialNET, AutoCAD, Lode Data, for mapping and design of the HFC network.
Knowledge of construction practices for written step by step instructions to HFC Construction to follow, for project completion.
Through understanding of fiber network’s including ring architecture, splicing, tracking, link loss, hub to customer location & fiber assignments.
Manage multiple projects at one time
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Design Rainier Connect outside plant telecommunications systems
Prepare engineering plans and specifications
Maintain SpatialNET Maps, Visio’s, Excel Tracking form & records
Read, interpret, and apply, rules, policies, and procedures
Meet all schedules and timelines
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others internal & external.
Compile and analyze technical data and information
