Position Overview

A Y-Com Construction Manager provides project leadership for large-scale projects with an emphasis on aerial and underground telecommunication construction throughout Vermont. This position is accountable for all aspects of a project’s success, from the initial planning stages to the execution and completion of the project while exceeding our customers’ expectations. The construction manager ensures projects are constructed in accordance with design, budget, scope of work and schedule throughout the project lifecycle. This position collaborates with upper management in the planning and execution of the job. Regional travel will be required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Manage the deployment, execution and closeout of a variety of telecommunication infrastructure projects to include fiber to the cell-site (FTTCS), fiber to the building (FTTB), fiber to the home (FTTH), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), backhaul, backbone, and metro fiber ring build-outs in rural, residential, and metropolitan areas
Oversee project budget, scope of work, labor and project lifecycle with profit and loss responsibilities
Supervise and track project milestones and timelines. Track, review, and approve in-house and sub-contractor daily production reports, create and manage progressive project documentation to ensure accurate reporting
Lead multiple in-house and subcontractor construction teams within residential, rural, and metropolitan areas
Serve as the primary contact on assigned project
Motivate, mentor and provide direction to field teams to ensure efficient project execution
Negotiate vendor pricing, make timely purchases, and secure favorable delivery schedules to ensure prompt installation and maximize productivity
Develop long term working relationships with preferred vendors and subcontractors to secure the best available pricing, increase actual gross margins, and improve client satisfaction
Investigate project cost variances while ensuring that efficient processes are in place
Resolve issues affecting projects scope, quality, effort, risk, and timeline
Maintain positive working relationships with customers, city officials, jurisdictional authorities, and utility representatives
Perform on-site surveys and coordinate field meetings to ensure projects meet the delivery/commitment dates identified
Create and manage contingency plans for the projects
Monitor and track work of in-house crews and subcontractors to ensure accountability and accuracy, as well as making sure that specifications are being met and standards are being followed for both safety and construction
Ensure all crews have safety vests, cones, truck signs, hard hats and any other required safety gear. Safety is very important and all crews must maintain a professional appearance
Required Skills/Abilities

Minimum of (5) years in the telecommunications industry with outside plant construction, fiber optics, telecommunication architectures, optical transport equipment, and project management experience
At least (3) years of experience of project management, and/or engineering along with a proven track record of construction management, project performance, and project profitability from award to project completion
Working knowledge of inside and outside plant fiber optic network infrastructure, engineering design and construction
Advanced knowledge of public right of way and ISP/OSP Fiber Optic Plant deployments to include maintenance of traffic (MOT)
Ability to engage with the customer/client and establish a positive working relationship
Ability to listen to customer needs and propose solutions to help resolve their issues
Ability to communicate internally and externally the technical aspects of the project in a clear and concise way
Experience in schedule projects, cost engineering, budgeting, forecasting costs, status reports, procurement, and negotiation with subcontractors and material vendors required
Management experience in driving in-house crews and subcontractor performance
Knowledge and understanding of construction/engineering drawings, records, route maps, scopes of work, testing/QC, and auditing projects for compliance to SOW and contractual obligations
Proficiency with MS Office, Visio, Google Suite (including Earth), DWG drawings and computer skills
Must possess a valid driver’s license and is expected to drive as required to assigned projects to ensure on-time and on-budget project delivery
‘Safety First’ attitude and strict adherence to safety procedures
Building and construction knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways or roads
Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, including design, use, repair, and maintenance
Must be able to work some weekends and evenings when needed
Regional travel required
Physical Requirements

Must be able to work in a non-climate-controlled environment, work in inclement weather, stand, and drive for extended periods of time
Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas
Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable and sustained use of your arms, legs, and moving your entire body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, sitting standing, and handling of materials up to 75lbs
Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment
