Your synopsis sound logical and reasonably thought out. However I have been in the business much long than you and I have seen everything from great rates with great help to below cost rates and substandard help. I have been an engineer for an MSO hiring contractors, a design engineer specifying build criteria, a construction inspector, expert witness and a contractor during my 40+ year tenure. That said, I thought if I bid against idiots that bid below cost just to get the job, that they would eventually go out of business. That would clear the way for me and others to successfully win bids with a fair & profitable margin. But what I found was idiots sprout like weeds. There is and will always be a surplus of idiots sprouting up & bidding below cost. And worst than that, the ignorant and/or greedy middle management operators accepting those low bids and expecting stellar results.
