Re: What is a prime?

Contrary to danimal’s off the wall but accurate definition, in this forum’s world, a Prime or more accurately a Prime Contractor is the company that has the contract from the Owner of a project.  For example; Comcast (Owner) would hire Mastec (Prime Contractor) to preform services such as Aerial or buried mainline. If the Prime Contractor needs more or specialized help, then the Prime Contractor hires Sub-contractors.  Sub-contractors have a contract with the Prime Contractor not Owner.  Therefore called Sub-contractors.   Some Prime Contractors have no employees to do any of the labor. In those cases, all the labor is done by Sub-contractors. Some Owners demand that most of the labor be done by the Prime Contractor.
