I use the 3M crimplock mechanical ends with a jdsu fiber meter. It gives you power levels and inspects the ends. A one-click tool is a must to clean the ends as well. I don't do any fusion splicing.  I haven't done any aerial fiber jobs; only buried wire jobs to residences. I did hear from a guy in construction though to not put your ladder on the fiber strand.
