Your are partly correct, if you leave the spread sheet format set to use Open Document standards rather than Microsoft proprietary format. This situation is easly resolved by using the robust set of document standards supported by Open Office using the menu options:
File -> Save As -> and then in a drop down selection box titled "Save as type" choose what standard you wish to use. It just so happens that the 4 most recent versions of Microsoft standards are supported. Simply activate the drop down list, and left click once on the standard of your choice, modify the file name as necessary and save.
I have been using Open Office and it's kissing cousin Libre Office for several years and never had a problem supporting Microsoft users.
