I pay about $400 a year for a 1 million$ umbrella/ general liability insurance, and signed a form to not need workmans comp, in Texas you can opt out of workmans comp, not sure about NC, but 8.5% of each check seems crazy, sounds like your company is padding its pockets.
Thats roughly $6000 a year for an average contractor making $1000/week.
