Strait of Hormuz? Dude, Google a fucking map before posting.
Iran's coast extends well beyond the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, down the entire length of the Gulf of Oman to the Arabian Sea. The Arabian Sea covers over 50% more area (1.5 million sq. mi.) than the Mediterranean and opens across a 1500 mile boundary to the Indian Ocean.
Incirlik Air Base in Turkey is our largest in the region, with nukes at the ready. They can almost see Syria's coastline from their windows. The UK has 2 bases on Cypress, which also looks over the Syrian coast. In addition to the U.S. air and naval presence, 6 NATO countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey) lie along the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean opens to the Atlantic Ocean through the 9 mile wide Strait of Gibraltar.
Which one do we "control" more? Duh.
