Not sure I would encourage someone to get into splicing at this time, but that is just me.  I would NEVER encourage someone to rent a splicer.  That is the biggest waste of money there is in the industry.  The price you pay for 3 months of rent, you can buy a good 2nd hand splicer.  
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Quit being part of the problem!
