If it is past statute of limitations:
Send the lawyer a letter stating just that.
In the letter demand proof of obligation to pay.
Then tell the lawyer/collection agency that you will be reporting them to the state BAR/Consumer Affairs office about unlawful business practices and harrassment.
These things will usually get them to leave you alone. I had a collection/lawyer after me for a debt by someone with the same name, my wife was a legal secratary for a civil litigation lawyer and wrote a letter saying this was not the right person, prove I was and owed the money, and theatened them with an oversite organization investigation. Haven't heard from them since.
