In California you are in good Hands.
This is what I would do is I would make a swap. Try swaping the equipment for your check.
I wouldn't hold it forever or dare sell it. But I would try to bargin with them for a little bit. Not long enough for them to call the cops... (the way I look at it is if you intend to give it back its not theft)
I would just give them a little bluff.
They ask for the equipment I ask about my check. If it works I get paid there on the spot great.
If not then you got the other options, but at that point the equipment is doing you no good. Just taking up space.
