I always had the best success with an analog meter, SAM 1, old Sadelco, etc. and a dipole antenna.   The meter can be tuned easily to a strong harmonic of the 60 HZ interference and with the dipole you can at least narrow your search to two directions.  The closer you get to the interference, the more pad you have to crank into the meter.  I have found items such as heat pads, water heater elements, door bell transformers, etc.  The worst to get fixed was a transformer bank that was easily 50-75 years old, and hadn't been touched since.
