Now that does make sense. The Primestar box had all the bells and whistles...but if the clock didn't work or the pass through circuit failed to run a lamp the whole rig went back. Why not continue the concept? Take something like a D 12 and just have a small module rack for features like recorder, HD capability, SWM and like that? The USAF went to printed circuits in the 1950s to avoid soldering and replacing tubes in flight. Worked for them.
