If you have on you have hundreds, maybe thousands that just haven't announced themselves yet. Same with liver stones (usually incorrectly called gallstones).
Most people have thousands of them building up in the liver, blocking all the little ducts, impairing the function of the organ, which is why people start getting rashes, psoriasis, acne, bad breath, etc. as the body starts trying to eliminate the toxins through the skin or lungs that are no longer being detoxed or eliminated through the liver and kidneys.
They don't announce themselves until they become calcified which is when they cause the pain from the sharp edges like you mentioned.
