Well, here is the update. We had him put down this evening. The past 2 weeks, he was just getting worse and worse, the last day or so he stopped eating and drinking. Would wake up in the middle of the night screaming (howling) in pain, not being able to walk well.
It is the hardest thing to do, it was the only thing to do. I miss my bestest buddy already and he hasn't been gone an hour.
