Will it be the smell of Victory or the Agony of Defeat , at present Safari is the leader at 473 lbs , Not a big Marlin by any means . The largest I ever recall was over 1000 lbs . It was to large to bring on board through the billfish door, so they tied it off to the side of the boat to drag it in . A Great White attacked it and removed majior chunks . The largest shark ever caught inshore here was a 900lb Tiger Shark caught off the dock at Davis Seafood on the Morehead City waterfront , I once caught a 5ft hammerhead on Radio Island at the State Park , with people swimming everywhere around me , till I brought Jaws in , after that nobody went back in the water that day . Sharks are always out there but seldom bother people , but every now and then Chomp ,Chomp , I recall a few years back two people being killed by a shark down towards Hatteras Island . My two oldest sons are avid surfers here and they see sharks all the time , it just depends on the kind and size of the shark if they get out the water . The last time I recall the beaches being closed to swimming because of sharks was 1982 and it was only for two days . The last attack here was a couple years back when a young girl got bit on the leg in Emerald Isle . You are usaully pretty safe unless there are big bait balls of fish close to shore . If you see schools of bait swimming down the beach just stay out of them . We have more people that drown for various reasons than ever get attacked by sharks . Cross you fingers , I want someone to catch a Monster Marlin , I'm still hoping someone will hook up and boat a Big Boy . I'll keep you posted.
