I could write a million stories about this Place that is now only locked in Some Distant Memories. There was an Art Stocks Playpen South located on South Federal Highway in Ft. Lauderdale Fl. and there was a sister nightclub called Art Stocks Playpen North Located on Jersey Shore in NJ . Art Stock started out as a school teacher before owning 12 nightclubs and three horse farms . I was privileged to work at the Playpen South in Ft.Lauderdale in 1975,76,77,&78 . It was the spot back in the Day for spring break , the Drinking Age was 18yrs old and most nightclubs closed by 2am , but not the Playpen , it closed at 4am ,it would legally hold some 2800 people . It Jammed , with two Rock and Roll stages in the front room surrounded by bars , 5 of them and a kitchen , One band stopped the other picked it up , in the back was the Disco room , four more bars and the DJ booth , when I first started working at the Club as a professional Bouncer I was always in trouble with Toby Lions the manager because , back in the Day the ladies so graciously adored the Duck , ask my brother Carl Whitfield , he also worked there . I then met Billy Tampa (Nicknamed Hitman by Art Stock ) as Billy dove in front of a Mob hit on Art and took a Bullet for Art , anyway , Billy was the Captain of the Playpen Yacht that cruised up and down the Beach front From Pompano Inlet to Port Everglades every Day , while the Planes flew the Banners overhead . Once I got to know Hitman , as we called him that. All I had to do other than throwing drunks out of the Club or Bar tending was to walk around asking beautiful ladies if they wanted to go out on a yacht the next day, and told them all they need to bring was a bathing suit. Those were the days ,let me tell you . I'd get up a round 10 am and I'd go by the Playpen and pick up liquor , beer and ice and meet the ladies I had invited down to the Boat which was Docked behind Arts waterfront home on the main Canal , not far from the Bootlegger a waterfront bar. Anyway (Hitman) Billy Tampa loved the Beautiful young Chickies as he called them , we'd take them out and down the Ocean Front , getting them Drunk and Having them Dance All over the Yacht with music blasting having a good Time . The Playpen back in the day would have hundreds of people waiting to get in when we opened the doors at 8 pm . It was those .25 <> .75 cent mixed drink specials from 8 to 10 . Those were the Days , Thanks for reading.
