Ed and his fellow workers contacted the CWA and began to organize a union at Comcast in Beaver Falls. Comcast pushed back. Comcast didn't solve the problems they just began to intimidate those who wanted a union. They pushed the workers to the legal limit, and then they pushed over it. Ed was fired because he knew his rights at work and because he was willing to stand up for them. When Comcast couldn't intimidate him into silence they broke the law and got rid of him.
Because he knew his rights, Ed did not go away quietly. He talked with the CWA and they filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge on his behalf. "It was great to have the union backing me, it was better than having my own attorney." Ed said
Because it was obvious to the Board that the law had been broken, Comcast had to pay up and they had to post a notice in the workplace saying that they wouldn't break the law in the future. Ed could have gotten his job back but thought his dignity was more important. "I like the work" Ed said, "I just didn't like working there. When you are pushed that hard the quality of the work suffers and then safety begins to suffer too. I want to be able to do work I'm proud of. There is no place for that at Comcast."
