Looking at it realistically. I do not think it could happen with the power lines in the decrepit condition they are in. I believe that they have the technology to do it, but it would require a retro of the power system and then you are at square one.
I have always believed that the future is wireless and FTTH. They will be battling it out with 100MBps speeds and storage/software service. You won't even have a computer anymore - just a remote station that you access everything on - a giant network if you will.
