Job Description and Responsibilities :

The Director of Engineering will provide leadership and oversight for large scale engineering projects with field engineers, drafters and designers. This position has in depth experience designing OSP systems in the commercial market, including fiber deep deployments, backhaul and network upgrades. Includes in depth understanding of aerial & underground fiber optic cable systems, passive optic network systems (PONs), splicing, testing, termination, cable placement, heavy construction/infrastructure & aerial make ready tasks. Along with the knowledge to maximize network architectures to meet expanding client demands on bandwidth.

Primary Responsibilities:

-Lead and manage crews on engineering “Fiber Deep or Fiber To The X” (FTTX) field surveys and designs with aerial and underground, MDU & ISP cable plant deployments

-Engineer FTTX commercial market designs to link multiple large design areas, each serving approximately hundreds of homes, municipal and community facilities, multiple dwelling units (MDUs), & large, small and vertical businesses

-Engineer the FTTH designs using satellite imagery or other aerials

-Develop final design package for each distribution area to include final approved design drawings, splicing details, bills of material (BOMs), permits and easement documents

-Responsible for staff forecasting, placement and replenishment to meet the client’s production requirements

-Manage make ready engineering projects, OSP ride out activities including: preliminary design pole verification, parcel verification, design verification, utility verification, routing obstacles, aerial to underground percentage verification

-Manage creation and use of base maps and clean-up of provided utility aerial and underground utilities data, parcel maps, DOT maps, and maps from other various sources

-Responsible for pole surveys, utility ROW and attachment requirements, gathering local ordinances and other requirements, and preliminary strand data collection

-Define FTTX hut boundaries and propose hut locations-line diagrams, and updating splicing sheets

-Ensure compliance with established policies and procedures and maintains effective internal control

-Develop training and mentoring programs for team to allow for continued learning and to keep our workforce current with software, hardware and techniques used in the telecommunication field

-Leverage contracts and customers to grow market share organically along with providing solutions and suggestions to maximize network performance, planning and ability to improve customer service and responsiveness to needs as market conditions demand.

-Other duties as assigned

Requirements :

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering plus 8-10 years’ experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience


Experience:

-8-10 years’ experience in commercial telecommunications engineering, underground/aerial designs, make ready engineering and construction, operations, maintenance/repair and installation

-Knowledge of commercial standards, National Electric Safety Code (NESC), RUS requirements, state & local requirements (per metro market)

-Proven knowledge of inside and outside plant fiber optic network infrastructure, and engineering design


Technical Skills:

-BICSI RCDD is preferred, but not required

-Highly skilled in customer applications (ICGS/FMS/Spatial, etc.)

-Expert level understanding of project requirements, BOL, BOM design criteria & efficient design in customer applications

-Advanced understanding of copper, fiber and/or CATV design standards and requirements

-Computer and Microsoft Office proficiency, including use of graphics, word processing, and electronic spreadsheet applications


Soft Skills:

-Skill in mentoring and training employees with varying educational backgrounds and aptitudes

-Experience building and maintaining interpersonal relationships, managing conflict, solving problems, and handling multiple assignments

-Must have excellent communication skills as well as the ability to lead a team to meet our companies financial, quality and production objectives

-Recognize and provide a safe work site with acceptable quality and efficiency

-Highly organized and detail orientated

-Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced environment


Physical Requirements:

-Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing

-Individuals must have a valid driver’s license and driving record meeting the company policy conditions

-Must be in good physical condition with the ability to stoop, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat and lift 50 lbs; includes body weight, equipment, tools and boxes

-Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces

-Ability work nights and/or weekends as required

-Ability to travel up to 100% of the time, including short notice travel. Travel may include local site travel or national travel depending on training needs
