Finding Businesses to sub out of

I've been in the telocomunications construction line of work since I was 15 ( my family got me on with there company). Im living in Georgia, and trying to figure out how you go about getting into the business on your own. Do u buy all your equiptment and tools first then go looking for work? Or do you try to talk to companies first and try to get contracts and relationships first then go out and spend the money on bucket trucks, splicers, lasher ect.?
