after spending over 20 years working and learning on my onan [1987 with points] beleave me they are nothing like a car motor . but 99% of the time if they are running bad it's a dirty or unadjusted carb / govenor. all gas now a days has ethal that leaves deposits that build up in carb's and also if it is left sitting goes bad in 30 days. new carb or not dirty gas plugs carb's up right away. also note onan's have solid liftters and they need zinc in there oil to lube them which the u s gov. made the oil co.'s stop adding to motor oil a long time ago and that wears down cam's [you can buy the zinc addatives needed at auto parts stores]. if you change to like a honda / brigg's type motor look into a bigger or smaller pully for it to get a fast enough speed of movment for your boom and you will want an elect. starter on for sure . i hope this is helpful and above all stay safe .
