In eastern NC it is 3 feet and the height of the pole.. 35 foot pole is 3 feet plus 3.5 or 6.5 feet in the ground/40 foot pole 7 feet in the groung / 50 foot pole class 5 pole is 8 foot in the ground/50 foot class 3 pole is the same 8 foot in the ground .when we were in Fl. we place the pole so the birthmark was 5 foot off the ground which was the same as NC
