You can get into fiber but the rates for the work is going down while most of the work is done during the night. If your desire is to do fiber, you will want to get with a good company and learn the in's and out's.
However put more thought on what you see going on around you as far as where the industry is going. Expample.. Coax is getting repalced with fiber, cell sites are all getting hooked up with fiber and this work will continue for a number of years. However a better thought is to why? Even cable companies are trying there hand a wireless access points. Fiber is the new pipe line and more of our services will be available over the internet via fiber or wireless. I would give a hard look at getting Cisco certified, learning more internet base knowleage and get into wireless game.
Just food for thought.
