I would say if you are truly a contractor you should do what a normal contractor does in the real world and ask for a deposit based on the complete scope of work and expected billing for that job.
When performing low voltage installations I always asked for and got deposits that covered material and labor so that I don't pay and end up in debt for work product provided that somebody else benefits from.
Too many fly by night wanna be primes out there looking to finance their business via the subs they contract the work out to.
We always signed their contracts, but now it's time to ask that they sign a contract/agreement prior to you undertaking work you might never get paid for, and as well run a background/credit check on the company and it's officers that you are intending to provide services to.
This industry has gone to crap in how the contractors are treated financially and morally and we only have ourselves to blame for not doing due diligence.
