Air compressor

What is the smallest air compressor that I could get away with using to power up a 2" underground piercing tool. I see alot of guys using big towable 185cfm compressors,but a 2" only uses on average 20-30cfm to power up. Seems like using the 185cfm is not needed. I'm wondering if gas powered tank air compressor would work or any other suggestions? Thanks.
