Paying for Receivers?

Ok I was recently charged for a receiver I had on the truck for longer than the time frame allowed.  Sup said he was charged for the rec and of course it rolls down hill.  So now the receiver is mine but if I put it in I will get back 75% of the cost I paid for it.  I was wondering if I could just keep the receiver and activate it in my home as I have been needing to get a extra receiver and its a HD one so kinda kills two birds with one stone.  So my question is can I just call direct TV and say I bought the receiver and they will activate it or am I better to just turn them in.

Thanks!
