I agree completely.  Dont use the cheap electrodes.  Change them out with Fitel brand and if that doesnt work, send it in.  The 177 is a good splicer, and you are right.  A good splice is a good splice.  But a "good" splice can be a weak splice, it can pop with temperature change or other physical issues.
If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. Quit being part of the problem!
